The coral used in this sculpture was gathered from the beaches of the Ryukyu Islands of Japan in the South China Sea. Typhoon Akoni literally tore the coral from its deep sea bed and deposited it on the sandy beaches, where my family and I gathered it after the storm had passed. It is a unique piece of brain coral,Meandirinidae, one of the most prized corals of the region.
