Sculpture Space Sculptor Residency Program

Sculpture Space Sculptor Residency Program

Sculpture Space, Utica, NY, invites artists to apply for a residency between September 2011 and August 2012. Twenty new artists are selected each year; each receives a $2000 stipend to help with residency expenses. A maximum of four artists stay at any one time, for ample workspace. The Artist Review Committee, with one rotating guest panelist, makes the selection in January. Recent panelists include curator consultant Nancy Rosen (Nancy Rosen, Inc.) and Denise Markonish (Mass MoCA). Artists are notified in March of the panel's decision. Primary criteria are quality, originality and potential for growth. The receipt deadline for applications is December 1, 2010.

Artists have daily, 24-hour studio access and are expected to stay for the full 2-month work stay. The facility consists of 5,000 square feet of open studio space w/specialized equipment and two 400-square-foot private studios available by arrangement. A PT studio manager offers technical support. The studio is located on 3 acres in downtown Utica, which is 200 miles northwest of NYC in the Mohawk Valley. Artists have private bedrooms in a shared apartment one block away from the studio, available free or at low cost to visiting artists. Free housing/plus transportation stipends for NYS artists. All artists are responsible for materials, specialized tools, and their meals.
