The Captive began life as a response to my personal conflicts with freedom and space. As the work took form, it acquired a far more piquant meaning and I realised that despite the challenges we face in the free world, for many people elsewhere, oppression has a far harder, physical meaning. The Captive is therefore pitched at many levels, but most particularly it is for the many nameless prisoners held in dreadful circumstances in the dungeons of the dispossessed, stripped of the most fundamental rights, their voices unheard, hidden in the world?s darkest corners. The Captive strives to give them voice.
