Storm King Art Center Celebrates 50th Anniversary |
artdaily.org MOUNTAINVILLE, NY.- Storm King Art Center, widely recognized as one of the world's outstanding sculpture parks, celebrates its fiftieth anniversary with two special exhibitions opening on Saturday, June 5. 5+5: New Perspectives, comprising 12 new and recent works by ten artists, is sited in Storm King's expansive landscape. It includes work by five artists who are new to Storm King and five who are represented in the collection. Six of the sculptures were created specifically for this occasion. Inside the Museum Building, The View from Here: Storm King at Fifty explores key aspects of Storm King's rich and varied history. Located in the historic Hudson River Valley in Mountainville, New York, approximately one hour north of New York City, Storm King encompasses over 500 pristine acres of rolling hills, woodlands, and fields. Selections from its distinguished collection of more than 100 works from the mid-20th century to the present are on permanent view. Storm King President John P. Stern notes, "Storm King is thrilled to mark its fiftieth anniversary with these special exhibitions, one celebrating Storm King's past and the other continuing its tradition of presenting new works. The highly diverse sculptures in 5+5: New Perspectives at once complement and engage with both the collection and one another. They beautifully enrich the enjoyment of the Storm King experience, which is unique with every visit." 5+5: New Perspectives For this special presentation, Storm King Director and Curator David R. Collens worked with the artists to select locations in which to site the sculptures, which will be dispersed throughout Storm King's verdant hills and fields. The sculptures can thus be appreciated for their intrinsic value, as well as in relation to nearby works with which they stand in dialogue, offering new perspectives on Storm King's celebrated collection. Mr. Collens states, "One of the most exciting aspects of this exhibition is the variety of styles and mediums represented. We are grateful to all of the artists who have created or loaned artworks in honor of Storm King's anniversary." The sculptures in 5+5: New Perspectives will remain on view for the 2010 season and, in many cases, also through the 2011 season. An updated map will help visitors discover the new works in the exhibition while also identifying those in the permanent collection. |
