THE BELLINGHAM HERALD, RUSS KENDALL
BELLINGHAM, WA - A reception to celebrate 16 urban sculptures by internationally renowned sculptor Sebastian will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, Feb. 12, at 2107 Iron St.

The sculptures will be exhibited through Oct. 3 in Bellingham. The first installation, "Libra," was made on Jan. 27 in front of Whatcom Museum's Lightcatcher building at 250 Flora St.

"Libra" is one of a dozen Zodiac-named pieces, plus several others, that in December were trucked from Mexico to a Bellingham warehouse, where they are being repainted and readied for display.

Mexican Scupture RUSS KENDALL | BELLINGHAM HERALD Tickets for the reception are $30 and are available at Allied Arts Gallery, 1418 Cornwall Ave. For more information, call 676-8548 or go to sebastianbellingham.org. Allied Arts of Whatcom County won a $25,000 state tourism grant for the project, and Sebastian's foundation is covering the nearly $17,000 cost of trucking the pieces north, said George Drake, a friend of Sebastian's and one of the organizers. Additional fundraising is under way, including having people "sponsor" a sculpture with a $1,000 donation.

The piece was installed on the sidewalk at Flora Street and Grand Avenue, next to the Whatcom Museum's Lightcatcher building, on Wednesday, Jan.27, 2010. Local arts organizers hope to have up to 17 sculptures by Sebastian displayed outdoors downtown by March.
