Mlive-FlintJournal By Beata Mostafavi Ruth Mott Foundation executive director on new sculpture at Applewood: reflects 'the spirit of Ruth Mott who loved all things beautiful and found beauty in all things'FLINT, Michigan - In honor of the 110th birthday of Flint's late civic leader Ruth Rawlings Mott, a 40-feet-tall stainless steel sculpture created by a renowned Chicago artist was unveiled Wednesday. The 3 1/2-ton piece reflects Flint's industrial history against the natural backdrop of the historic Applewood estate overlooking Gilkey Creek. Sculptor Richard Hunt has spent the last two years in a Chicago studio designing, cutting, pounding and welding the piece gifted to the Ruth Mott Foundation from the Mott-Warsh collection. Its value was not disclosed. "In this tall work of steel Richard intends us to consider how industrial forms and natural forms come together in one place," Ruth Mott Foundation Executive Director Steve Wilson said next to a portrait of Ruth Mott and white-iced cake topped by a 110 birthday candle. "The beauty of man's labor and God's." Perhaps reflecting the larger-than-life reputations of the estate's onetime residents Ruth Mott and husband General Motors founder Charles Stewart Mott, the sculpture takes its place as the largest piece of public art in the city. The piece, along with other enhancements at Applewood and Mott property over the years "quietly reflects the spirit of Ruth Mott who loved all things beautiful and found beauty in all things," Wilson said, describing Flint's late first lady as a leader "so dedicated to her beloved city of Flint and who definitely understood the distinct role art played in a community." |
Richard Hunt a masterful sculptor at creating metal in high-up space. Not an easy task, I might add! I hope to be going through Flint myself in the near term and will most assuredly take Mr. Hunt's sculptural endeavors in and try to bring everyone varied angled photos, as this sculpture so deserving of that. |

Ray Holloway, of Washington DC, does finish grinding the wields of a 40-foot metal sculpture titled "Columnar Constructionâ by Richard Hunt before it's unveiling to the public on Wednesday at Applewood Estate in Flint. The sculpture is being gifted to Applewood in honor of Ruth Mott's 110th birthday. The appearance of the sculpture will continue to change after Hunt continues to finish it following the installation as it takes on it's characteristic in the sculptures setting.
