Mlive By John Liberty | Kalamazoo Gazette Plainwell holding sculpture contest with a $10,000 prizePLAINWELL - The Plainwell Arts Council is seeking participants for its a sculpture contest, which offers a $10,000 prize. The competition will be part of the redevelopment of the Plainwell Paper Co. mill, which closed in 2000 after 113 years in operation. The city purchased the mill in 2006 and plans to re-open it later this year when it relocates its offices from City Hall to the renovated the space. The winning piece will be installed in the northeast entrance plaza, according to a press release. Interested professional artists have until 4 p.m. Jan. 27 to submit the necessary items, including a resume and images of their work. Details of the contest can be viewed at plainwellartscouncil.com. On Feb. 17, a committee will select five finalists, who will tour the mill and have access to some of the scrap material, which should be incorporated into their concepts. Each finalist will submit a concept, and the public will vote for the winner between April 16 and May 18. |
