Tallest free-standing sculpture installed in London

LONDONERS witnessed the installation and unveiling of a brand new public work of art by highly collectable and contemporary monumental equine sculptor Nic Fiddian-Green.

The work by the artist, who is based at a studio on Bramley's Wintershall Estate, is now the tallest free-standing bronze in London after appearing last Tuesday (September 14).

The 33ft-high Horse's Head has taken a year to build, weighs 17 tonnes and a road had to be closed for its delivery.

It was made specifically for the site at Marble Arch and replaces an earlier piece temporarily installed last summer that was originally commissioned by Sir Anthony and Lady Bamford. That work has now left for their Daylesford estate in Gloucestershire.

Fiddian-Green said: "This 'London Horse' fulfils Boris Johnson's vision of making London a more beautiful city.

"It is also the largest bronze in the world to have been cast using the ancient process of 'lost wax', which took place at the Castle Foundry in Oswestry."

"This classically inspired sculpture resonates a sense of wonder through its sheer monumentality and beauty and I sincerely hope it will inspire the people of London as they pass it by," he added.

This summer the sculptor's work has been well received at Glyndebourne, Royal Ascot and more latterly Goodwood, where a monumental Greek Head was shown on the Trundle Hill on the South Downs, before moving to the racecourse itself for Glorious Goodwood.

Fiddian-Green has been working on a large scale for some time now.

His many global exhibitions have taken him from London to New York, Paris, Dublin, Dubai, Melbourne and Sydney, where film star Russell Crowe first saw and started collecting his work.

His high profile fans are too numerous to mention but they include Ringo Star, JK Rowling and Tom Cruise.
