New Art Centre, Roche Court - Mimmo Paladino |
Paladino in the ParkWe are pleased to announce that we have installed three sculptures in the Park by Mimmo Paladino and a fourth is displayed in the Artists' House. Paladino uses signs and symbols taken from ancient Rome combined with images from contemporary culture to create a personal and poetic vision; referencing the past is his way of expressing the essence of things now. He describes the way his sculpture 'echoes the physical and mental landscape of the South of Italy, the area around Benevento, of Samnium, abounding in fragments rather than distinct images' (2008). Mimmo Paladino was born in Paduli, near Benevento, in 1948. He spent his childhood in Naples and studied at the Liceo Artistico in Benevento from 1964-68. His first solo exhibition was held at the Studio Oggetto, Caserta in 1969 and since then he has exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions worldwide. A major retrospective of his work was held in Munich at the Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus in 1985. Other major solo exhibitions have been held at the Galleria Civica d'Arte Contemporanea in Trento (1992); Forte Belvedere, Florence (1993); Scuderie di Palazzo Reale, Piazza del Plebiscito and Villa Pignatelli, Naples (1995-6) and at the South London Gallery (1999). He also had a major retrospective of his work at the Centro per l'Arte Contemporanea Luigi Pecci, Prato in 2002-03. Mimmo Paladino's work is held in public collections around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art |
