Leawood to dedicate new sculpture on May 27

LEAWOOD,KS - Leawood will dedicate its newest sculpture May 27 at the intersection of College Boulevard and Tomahawk Creek Parkway.

The sculpture, "My Mind" by Michael McClanahan, is a gate-like piece with wheels made of painted steel and 24-carat gold leaf.

McClanahan said the artwork represents his struggle with dyslexia and his efforts to read, write and cope in everyday life. McClanahan is a graduate of the Kansas City Art Institute with graduate studies education from Boston University.

"My Mind" was a donation to the city's Public Art Collection as a gift from Carol and Todd Haenisch as part of the Art in Public Places Initiative of the Leawood Arts Council.

The dedication ceremony is at 6 p.m., and attendees may park in the Creative Planning parking lot at the northwest corner of College Boulevard and Tomahawk Creek Parkway. Refreshments will be served.
