Marc Rébollo Sculpture

<< Play it Loud >> : Advice, written on the back of vinyle discs of Rock golden age and Pop Music.

With this postulate, Marc Rebollo shows a new square-shaped lacquer-painting serie (130 x 130 cm and 70 x 70 cm) and two sculptures, one made with bronze, and all specially made for the gallery's new space.

Following the example of the carrare marble sculpture "Never Die" which was ordered for Coste restaurant (La Socit, SaintGermain des Prs Square), "ROCK" is a deep black bronze sculpture which combines form and writting, as well. This artist plays with letters forms, which are dissociated each one from the others in a total imbalance, like a rock slide.

"Rock"
refers to the concept of sound power, to the word itself, and also to the underground culture which characterizes it.

Marc Rébollo displays his reflexion hanging the word, its typography, its sound, and the process related to abstraction. The artist also refers to the "statement", to american abstract artists, and to Magritte's word-paintings humor as well. He uses many different sources from everyday life or other fields without any link with art. A color aesthetic results from his work because of favourite artistic medium: industrial lacquer on wood.

Five lacquer-paintings about the words: "loud" and "play it loud" call us into question, beyond the immediate reference to English-spoken music, about permissiveness in our society and the more and more limited place for our individual liberty against collective norms.
In this regard, "Play it loud" is synonym of symbol.

The painting entitled "Bonne Apathie" ("Have a good Apathy") based on the wordplay and humour that the artist likes, refers toour own lack of anything better to do and our social withdrawal.

"I'm the juice", white/milk grey painting, quotes a short passage of Oran's song "Juice", a late 1980's soul/rap black singer fromthe New-York record "Def Jam". Those song words written in gold and multicoloured letters were picked up by the artist becauseof their jubilatory vaunt.

Marc Rébollo's sculptures and paintings have a great presence outcoming from a complex implementation, related to the lacquer sensuality and its colours that he uses with bright care.

"Because music is popular, established in our everyday life and is a part of our cultural heritage; many artists, writters or moviedirectors like Nick Hornby or Martin Scorcese, use it for long as a full fledged subject matter. As many of them, I grew up with Pop Music and its references. This musical context and my record dealer past, led me to feel music and painting as complementary fields".

Spatial Thoughts on Sculpture by Bill West
Marc Rebollo, just love his art, so playful, colorful and free to a controlled extent. I know our focus is sculpture, but some artist/sculptors are just plain great at both. I decided to feature the "ROCK" sculpture because it is exemplary in it's message and design. I have always thought that sculpture is visual music, more on that another day. Hope you enjoy "ROCK". Sounds like a wonderful show at the Galerie Nicolas Plescoff, well worth a visit to Paris! Here is a link to the full catalogue
