Marc Quinn Gold Sculpture of Kate Moss |
International-Business-Times By IBTimes Staff Reporter Kate Moss Gold Sculpture Auctioned for $900,000?British artist Marc Quinn's creative depiction of supermodel Kate Moss has reportedly been sold for a staggering $900,000 at a Sotheby's auction. A sculpture of the model titled "Siren" was first displayed by Quinn in 2006 showing the model in a contorted yoga position. Moss's ankles and arms are wrapped behind her ears. The sculpture resulted from an extensive study by Quinn of the supermodel, and it has been displayed in a number of art galleries since its first exhibition. In 2008, the artist again unveiled a new sculpture of Moss, but this time the entire "Microcosmos (Siren)" statue was carved out of 10 kilograms of 18-carat gold. Following its display at the British Museum in London, it was hailed as "the largest gold statue since ancient Egypt." It has been reported Quinn employed the same technique for carving the statue as was used by Damien Hirst for his famous diamond skull. "Microcosmos (Siren)" attracted widespread attention from the media and the art world alike. For the recent Sotheby's auction, the sculpture was sold with other artistic masterworks like Leon Kossoff's "A Street in Willesden" and Lucian Freud's "Interior Drawing, the Owl." |
