Katie Bassett - Artist Statement

I produce art that represents the female body through industrialized representations of clothing. My main concern is creating art that represents the issues that effect today's society. The central issue that I tackle is the manner woman find their identity through their clothing style. I execute this concern by creating clothing that is not wearable, this essentially takes away the issue of what clothing to wear. If the clothing that I fabricate were the only clothing that existed, no one would wear anything therefore identity would return to who a person truly is internally, rather than his or her exterior appearance. Is it what a person is on the inside that shapes them or is it something external that can often be shaped or changed at will. I tackle these fundamental issues our society is facing through my art. Often the rules need to be broken; by transforming typically utilitarian clothing into something "Not Suitable for Wearing", is to me, breaking the unwritten rules of fashion and identity.

Spatial Thoughts on Sculpture by Bill West
Katie Bassett out of the box and thought provoking sculptural creations. Might be hard to try on! I believe that is the point. Katie recently had a show at Jim Felice Studios, Danbury Ct. Nov. 12th & 13th. I like the "Purse Strings" piece shown above, one can only speculate on the many meanings that piece possesses.
