"Hammering Man" returning to work

"Hammering Man" is getting his missing arm back Tuesday.

The left arm of the 48-foot-tall iconic sculpture, removed for a repair project last fall, is expected to be lifted into place in the early afternoon, said Lori Patrick of the city's Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs.

Since its installation at First Avenue and University Street outside the Seattle Art Museum in 1992, the Jonathan Borofsky sculpture, which honors workers, has logged nearly 90,000 hours on the job. It is usually in continuous operation, except for maintenance conducted each Labor Day.

While the arm was removed, contractors rebuilt the dual gear cone drive, electric motor and lead counterweight system. The arm also was resurfaced and repainted.

The arm and its lead counterweight weigh 1,900 pounds.
