Sculptor Jason Scull at Rowe Fine Art Gallery May 7 and 8

SEDONA, AZ (April 28, 2010) Cowboy sculptor Jason Scull walks the walk and talks the talk. His family has been farming and ranching in Texas for 180 years. Jasons experience working with horses, cattle and cowboys have inspired his bronze sculptures since he began seriously pursuing art in 1987. Now, Rowe Fine Art Gallery, Tlaquepaques newest art destination, hosts an artists reception for Jason on May 7 from 5 to 8 p.m. and May 8 from 1 to 6 p.m. Art lovers will have the opportunity to watch Jason work on his most current piece, Dust Devil, a dynamic portrayal of horse and cowboy in action with a limited edition of only 32 pieces.

From an early age, Jason was drawn to art as strongly as he was drawn to ranching but Texas sensibility won. The youngest of four children, Jason studied animal science at Texas A&M University, and he spent time selling real estate until, at the age of 26, he enrolled in a basic drawing class at the San Marcos campus of Texas State University. Shortly thereafter, Jason was sculpting small figures from clay he bought at the local five-and-dime store, and eventually he wound up in a weeklong class at the Cowboy Artists of America Museum. The rest, as they say, is history.

Jason has been Rowe Fine Arts artist-in-residence since the gallery opened in March. He will continue to sculpt on-site until May 20, and then he will return to Sedona this fall. Its the first time Ive been an artist-in-residence, and Im enjoying it, says Jason. Sedona is different from any other place in the world in the fact that you have people from around the globe who are interested in art. Im sculpting in front of an international audience and talking to people about my process. What could be better?

Rowe Fine Art Gallery represents traditional and contemporary southwestern painters and sculptors. The gallery, located upstairs in Patio de las Campanas near the bell tower at Tlaquepaque Arts & Crafts Village, is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 928-282-8877 or visit www.rowegallery.com.

Spatial Thoughts on Sculpture by Bill West
Being headquartered out in Arizona I get to view a good amount of cowboy sculpture - this piece "Cowtastrophe" by Jason Scull is a well executed sculpture - it draws you in very nicely. Looking closely, you can almost imagine that you are ropin' & riding!
