PORTLAND, OR - Workers installed the latest in series of public sculptures on the Portland Transit Mall this morning. Hansen completed the sculpture in 2003, and it was moved recently to its new location at Southwest Sixth Avenue and Taylor Street in front of Nike Town from the nearby Public Service Building. Officials said the sculpture is owned by the Douglas Goodman family and is on loan to the City of Portland as part of the mall's Northwest sculpture collection. TriMet spokeswoman Bekki Witt said the sculpture is one of 14 new works on the recently renovated transit mall, and joins an additional 12 public art installations from the original transit mall, including Hansen's 1977 piece, "Talos No. 2,"(see below) at Southwest 6th Avenue and Stark Street. The piece installed today is on loan to the city, but approximately $750,000 was allocated to fund the mall art program based on 1.5 percent of eligible project costs, Witt said. Another great sculpture by James Lee Hansen installed in Portland - he has such a wonderful command of shape and message - It's worth a trip to Portalnd to view some of his work!Remember, sculpture makes our world a better place! |
