Buyer of Giacometti Sculpture Is Revealed |
New York Times Compiled by RACHEL LEE HARRIS February 28, 2010 The Giacometti sculpture "Walking Man I," which sold for a record $104.3 million at Sotheby's last month, above, was bought by the billionaire Lily Safra, according to Bloomberg News. The news service said that two dealers who declined to be identified had confirmed the identity of the buyer. The Brazilian-born Ms. Safra, widow of the banker Edmond J. Safra, is based in London, where the statue was part of a sale of Impressionist and modern art. Sotheby's has not identified the buyer, who made the bid by phone to Philip Hook, an expert at the auction house's Impressionist and modern art department. The sale broke the world-record price for a work of art at auction. |
