carynews.com BY SADIA LATIFI, Staff Writer Wisconsin sculpture wins top prizeCARY -- A giant wooden barrel spilling out sand and rooftops took home the top prize in Cary's 2010 Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition. Gail Simpson and Aristotle Georgiades, of Actual Size Artworks in Stoughton, Wis., won the $5,000 best-in-show prize at last week's opening reception for their cedar and steel sculpture, "Trickledown." The work was selected by Glenn Weiss, the manager of public art and design for Times Square in New York. It was one of 10 sculptures that went up outside Cary Town Hall last week as part of the town's third sculpture exhibition. All the artists received a $1,000 stipend for their piece from Cary Visual Art, which co-sponsored the project with the town. The 1,000-gallon whiskey barrel, filled with sand and spilling over rooftops is supposed to be a response to the current economic and housing crisis. It'll be up with the other sculptures until June 24. |
"Trickledown" tells a story, has a message that Gail Simpson and Aristotle Georgiades are so adroit in expressing in a very fresh way, visit their website Actual Size Artworks. Oh, and kudos to Cary Visual Art. |
