Artist's giant bronze 'Dancers' sculpture fetches $1.7million at auction

Fernando Botero created this eye-catching piece in 2007

A famous sculpture by renowned Colombian artist Fernando Botero has fetched over $1.7 million at auction.

The 10ft 5ins 'Dancers' sculpture depicts two huge bronze figures stood facing each other as if they are about to start a dance.

The impressive piece, which was made in 2007, set a new record for a sculpture by Colombian artist Botero when it was auctioned in New York.

The Dancers sculpture was acquired at the first session of Christie's Latin American Art sale on Tuesday.

A private European buyer made the successful bid for the piece, but their identity was not revealed.

A description of 'Dancers' on auctioneer Christie's website says: 'Like his other monumental bronze works, The Dancers are a powerful duo. Their corpulent bodies match one another in scale.

'Unlike the artist's paintings of couples, particularly dancers, where one partner is considerably smaller than the other, these majestic figures have nearly the same stature, underscoring the importance of both halves of this relationship.'

The previous record for a sculpture by Botero was $1.6 million, achieved in 2007 also at Christie's with 1986's white marble piece 'Mujer fumando,'or 'Woman Smoking.'

The creative understanding of shape and form - how it relates to space! There is only one Fernando Botero, his Sculptures and Paintings are instantly recognized worldwide. That pretty much says it all. Is there another Fernando Botero out there, are there shapes and form we haven't seen yet? I think that answer is a resounding YES! Sculptors keep Sculpting!
