Elena Colombo - Mirror Chain Sculpture |
The Mirror Chain is a fascinating design that just peaked my interest the first time I saw the photos. So I asked a few basic questions to Elena about the piece. Do you have any installs on this or is it a work-in-progress so to speak? Elena: Currently, it's a conceptual piece that I designed as one of my first "environmental art that works" pieces. It works as an alternative style "wind farm" where it could be rigged to generate electricity as a pinwheel. Each mirror spins on a shaft, and would be connected to power generating equipment. It could also be a non-working piece of art reflecting one landscape and integrating it into another. What started it or inspired you to create it? Elena: Don't know exactly. Just came into the brain ) I've always used mirrors in my life to reflect different things from a decoration standpoint, and also spent some time in college sculpture class integrating mirrors into the landscape, as Robert Smithson did in the past. |
 Elena Colombo, she works nicely with the basic elements: earth, air, fire and water. Now, this is where it gets real interesting, she takes those elements and infuses them into space oh so very well... Simply put, Elena Colombo has that rare ability to see and utilize space at the same time! |
