Doug Hyde Sculpture at Rowe Gallery

Meet Native American Sculptor Doug Hyde at Rowe Gallery April 1 and 2

Sedona, AZ (March 14, 2011) - Native American art aficionados are in for a special treat when they visit Rowe Fine Art Gallery during the Sedona Gallery Association's 1st Friday Gallery Tour. World renowned Native American bronze and stone sculptor Doug Hyde will be Rowe Fine Art Gallery's guest of honor on April 1 from 5 to 8 p.m. Wine, appetizers and pizza from New York Pizza & Deli will be served. On April 2 from 1 to 5 p.m., Doug will return to the gallery with samples of his materials for an interactive stone-carving demonstration.

A Native American of Nez Perce, Chippewa and Assiniboine descent as well as a Vietnam Veteran, Doug's list of accolades is long. His wildlife and figurative sculptures are included in the collections at the Smithsonian Cultural Resource Center, Heard Museum, Museum of the Southwest, Amon Carter Museum of Western Art, Eitelborg Museum and the Gilcrease Museum. Last month, Doug won the Kenneth T. and Eileen L. Norris Foundation Award for Sculpture at the Autry Center's Masters of the American West Fine Art Exhibition and Sale for his sculpture, "Doll Talk." Doug works with bronze, alabaster, marble and granite.

"There's a lot of curiosity about the stones," says Doug, who lives in Prescott and has been a sculptor for 40 years. "So I like to bring stone samples along with different grits of sandpaper and files. People can get a feel for the stone by trying their hand at carving right there in the gallery. And by the way, granite is the hardest."

Rowe Fine Art Gallery proudly represents traditional and contemporary southwestern painters and sculptors. The gallery, located upstairs in Patio de las Campanas near the bell tower at Tlaquepaque Arts & Crafts Village, is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 928-282-8877 or visit www.rowegallery.com.
