Daphna Russell Sculpture |
To some this calendar year is known, rather unimaginatively, as 2011. To art lovers in western Colorado, however, this may well be remembered as "the year of Daphna Russell."
Russell's work has been shown in galleries across America and throughout southwest Colorado; her name has become nearly synonymous with powerful, one-of-a-kind sculptures. She has contributed a number of pieces to Public Art eXperience (PAX) displays in Montrose, including "Descending Angel," "Horse of the Plains," and "Llama," which is featured in the current outdoor sculpture exhibition.
Russell is now being honored as the 2011 PAX poster artist, and has donated a raku sculpture of a draft horse to be raffled off on behalf of PAX. The horse is presently on display at Around the Corner Art Gallery in Montrose. The raffle winner will be named at the annual PAX Gala and Sculpture Exhibition in Centennial Plaza on Aug. 27.
Despite the fact that Russell has sculpted many horses during her career as a sculptor, this one is unlike any other - with a wild look in its eye.
"I am a traditional artist," Russell said. "I don't know how to copy - I cannot even reproduce my own work."
A dedicated teacher who has shared her wisdom with countless aspiring artists, Russell still recalls the words of a summer camp counselor who worked with her in the mountains of Georgia when she was just a school girl.
"She advised my parents to put me someplace where there was a good art department," Russell said. "She said I would make a good sculptor."
Today, Russell is among Colorado's most known and respected sculptors - and yet, she remains a student of the arts as well.
"Five years ago I was able to go to Italy again, to take a course in sculpture," Russell said. "I took (local artist) Bill Wilson along, and spent two weeks there. I loved it!
"I am always taking classes in sculpture," she said. "And I teach classes - teaching refreshes me. I love to see people growing, and I can encourage knowledgeability - I want my students to understand composition, and the use of texture."
Tickets for Russell's PAX raffle sculpture are three for $10, and are now on sale at Montrose City Hall (433 S. 1st St.), Around the Corner Art Gallery (447 East Main St.), Canyon Gallery (300 Main St.), the Montrose Association of Commerce & Tourism (1519 East Main St.). Tickets may also be purchased from individual PAX committee members. The winner need not be present at the time of the drawing (4 p.m. on Aug. 27) to win.
PAX, which coordinates a yearly sculpture display downtown, is a subcommittee of the Montrose Association of Commerce & Tourism in partnership with the City of Montrose. All works of sculpture on loan through PAX are offered for sale to the public. Over the past five years, PAX has contributed more than $46,350 worth of sculptures to the city's permanent sculpture collection. The most recent PAX acquisitions are Montrose artist Jerry Dunbar's "Buddies," and Ridgway Sculptor Michael McCullough's "Red Fox."
Daphna Russell, she is a true creator of original sculpture. Her one of a kind designs are truly remarkable. I just so enjoy them! |
