Mr. Majestic is a Maquette for bronze, I know he looks finished, and in fact he is to some extent, he is built with a very sturdy iron armature, to which is added expanding metal sheeting, covered with fiberglass matting, and finished with resin, There are two reasons for my using this method, one is that there isnt a foundry on Ibiza, all the maqettes must travel from here to Dublin Ireland and the foundry I work with there, a traditional armature with clay this size would never arrive in shape, and the cost of professional art carriers is price restrictive, therefore Mr. Majestic can sit here and wait his time without any deterioration.

The second reason, especially for this piece is that the client who initially commissioned him had no imagination of what the finished article would be like, so in fact he got a full-size Maquette that left no reason for doubt, unfortunately this client died before he completed the deal, he had paid for the Maquette, and was happy with the result, his family left it to me in his memory, so its mine and waiting for things to improve slightly before he goes to Dublin.

The foundries original quote for bronze, and my work would have made a retail price of about 25000 euros for the first copy, and a reduction of about 15% for editions up to eight, although this was two years ago.

Mr Majestic stands 210cm tall, and is built without a base (the one you see in the photo is for my use only) the idea is that all the supports would be under ground, what you eventually would see is the horse standing, or rearing directly from the ground, a base can be added if more height, or a different location is desired.

My idea for him came from my wanting to mix a bit of realism with a lot of abstraction, I wanted to portray a friendly type of animal, but rearing, kind of a warning "I am here, be careful" but without terror.

The title came from, I believe a terrible Charles Bronson film from the Seventies.

Spatial Thoughts on Sculpture by Bill West
I consider myself quite fortunate being able to view so many wonderful sculptures most every day of my life... all my gratitude is focused on the many talented and creative sculptors the world over. Last week, I just happened to be viewing Christopher Stone's new website and his piece Mr. Majestic caught my eye - there was just something about it... I can only hope that this piece can be cast sooner rather than later.
