Winners of 10th Outdoor Sculpture Competition announced

WINTER HAVEN, FLORIDA - Polk Museum of Art and the city of Winter Haven have announced the winners of the 10th Annual Florida Outdoor Sculpture Competition.

The sculptures are on display in Winter Haven's downtown Central Park.

The Best of Show Award went to Bruce H. White of Nokomis for his power-coated aluminum work titled "Piecemeal".

Second place went to Glenn Zweygardt of Alfred Station, N.Y., for "Basalt Man," made of basalt, cast bronze and cast glass.

Honorable mention went to Bruce Niemi of Kenosha, Wis., for his stainless-steel work titled "Embrace the Day."

The People's Choice Award went to Doug Makemson of Nicholson, Ga., for "Ain't Gonna Work on Maggie's Farm No More," which is made of teel, cast iron and oak.

The best of show, second place and honorable mention winners were chosen by Hank Foreman, assistant vice chancellor for the arts and cultural affairs at Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C. Foreman is one of the key organizers of the Rosen Outdoor Sculpture Competition, which was the basis for the local competition.

The People's Choice Award winner was determined by the crowd at the Central Park Stroll, which was held Thursday evening in Central Park. Visitors were asked to vote for their favorite sculpture, and the sculpture that received the most votes was announced as the winner at the end of the event.

The additional artists with sculptures on display are:

  • Michael Cottrell, Jacksosnville, "Receptor," steel

  • James Irving, Morrisville, Vt., "Divided," painted steel and granite

  • Cecilia Lueza, St. Petersburg, "Diversity," aluminum, stainless steel urethane and paint epoxies

  • Adam C. Walls, Laurinburg, N.C., "Creepy Crawley," painted steel

  • Bill Wood, Fairfax, Va., "A Few Degrees from Plumb and Square," fiberglass and polished aluminum

  • Valeria Yamamoto, Bay Harbor Island, "Seawhisper," bonding cement, grout, metal mesh and concrete sealer

  • The Florida Outdoor Sculpture Competition is a joint project of the city of Winter Haven and Polk Museum of Art. A call to artists was placed in October. Entries were due by January 2010. The selection was made by a committee that included representatives from the museum, the city of Winter Haven, and the general public.

A full-color catalogue has been produced to document the exhibition and can be obtained by contacting the city or Polk Museum of Art.
