Turkey-based Iranian sculptor Babak Sobhi has created three metal sculptures in the southwestern Turkish city of Antalya. Commissioned by the Antalya Municipality, Sobhi used scrap metal to make the new sculptures at the Antalya Cultural Center. "The new sculptures are called Man, Book and Flight, and have been installed at the entrance of the Antalya State Opera," Sobhi told Mehr News Agency. "Creating artworks from city waste can develop a new artistic and critical perspective," he added. These works can be sources of inspiration for viewers and encourage them to change their viewpoint towards the loads of objects considered as trash. Sobhi, who has been living in Turkey since 1990, has created some 100 sculptures in the country and has mounted numerous solo exhibitions. His ceramic sculpture, presenting the Gilgamesh epic in the Akkadian language, is one of his best-known works. The 30-ton artwork has been installed in the city of Diyarbakir and contains the complete Gilgamesh Epic based on the 12 clay tablets found in the library of the Assyrian king Ashurbanipal in Nineveh. Sobhi has also made several successful short films, including Journey, And Love was a Prayer and Shadow. |
