GIANT rings that form part of a £2.7m sculpture titled "Temenos" by acclaimed sculptor Anish Kapoor have been lifted into place.

The steel discs hold in place a huge installation called Tememos, the brainchild of acclaimed sculptor Anish Kapoor and leading structural designer Cecil Balmond.

They are renowned for the monumental scale of their work which can be seen in New York, Chicago and Beijing.

Temenos measures just under 50m high and almost 110m in length is located in the north-eastern corner of Middlehaven Dock in Middlesbrough.

Redcar has been earmarked for the second of the £15m Tees Valley Giants with artwork also destined for Stockton, Hartlepool and Darlington.

Councillor Dave Budd, Middlesbrough Council's executive member for regeneration and economic development, said: "The vision and ambition for Middlehaven is huge, so it's fitting that the first stage of what will be the world's biggest ever public art project should be at this key site.

"To have a piece by Anish Kapoor at the heart of Middlesbrough's regeneration, on this scale, is therefore a major coup for both Middlesbrough and the region as a whole.

"This latest engineering feat will give the people of Middlesbrough their first real impression of how this breathtaking sculpture will transform the town's skyline."
