Sculpting from the Figure | April 2 & 3 instructed by Alan LeQuire

Townsend Atelier is very pleased to announce that internationally recognized figurative sculptor, Alan LeQuire will be conducting a workshop at our studio in Chattanooga. This two day workshop will provide a solid foundation for the beginner and will enhance the work of the more advanced sculptor. Working from a live, unclothed model, students will focus on building the human figure in clay. Anatomy, proportion, composition, and an understanding of the complex relationships of the forms of the body will be taught. Students will develop an understanding of and a personal approach to the human form in space. Background lectures on figurative sculpture and demonstrations will be given.

Students should expect to complete one figurative piece ready for firing or molding.

About the instructor

Best known today for his monumental Athena Parthenos, the largest indoor statue in the western world, Alan LeQuire is a sculptor who has become well-known for his public commissions and sensitive portraiture. LeQuire works in virtually all sculpture materials, both direct carving and clay sculpting to be cast in bronze. LeQuire believes that the human figure is the single artistic subject to which all viewers inevitably respond. Monumental, miniature or life-size, LeQuire's sculptures manage to achieve a living quality, which contributes to a long-standing career of public commissions and a consistent demand for private collections. While his monumental works enrich the visual landscape of Nashville, many of his works, portrait sculptures and low-edition bronzes, are in institutions, including Vanderbilt University, Country Music Hall of Fame and Jack Daniel Distillery and private collections around the country. Recently LeQuire has begun touring his exhibit, Cultural Heroes, colossal portrait heads of cultural icons Bessie Smith, Leadbelly, Paul Robeson, Billie Holiday, Marian Anderson and Woody Guthrie. His most recent colossal work, Dream Forest, was unveiled July 2009. He has an MFA from University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and has apprenticed with Milton Hebald and Peter Agostini. Alan works and teaches in his studio in Nashville, TN.
