Stunning sand sculptures created for competition (and there's no danger they'll wash away with the tide)

The clever creators of these impressive sand sculptures needed more than a bucket and spade to build them. Sand artists from around the world have descended on Weymouth, Dorset, to construct their impressive works of art - all with a maritime theme - for the inaugural Sandworld event.

The exhibition has seen 10 sculptors painstakingly shape the creations made out of just sand and water which will be preserved for visitors to the resort to see this summer.

More than 1,500 tons of sand were dumped inside a huge marquee close to Weymouth's famous sandy beach on Britain's Jurassic Coast before the arists got to work.

They include creations as big as a double-decker bus in the form of two tall ships racing in the sea, a giant mermaid, fish and marauding vikings.

The event was launched this weekend but will be open to the public from April 22 to the end of October.

Spatial Thoughts on Sculpture by Bill West
We usually don't feature Sand Sculpture. This was an exception. These creations took time, effort and talent by the bunches! I reallly enjoy them, and hope others do as well.
