by John Adamson

I was given the root of an euonymus shrub ( Spindle tree) by Tim Hayton a member of the Lancashire and Cheshire Woodcarvers. It said Medusa to me immediately. Medusa was one of the Gorgons in Greek mythology and known for an ugly face and snakes instead of hair. The snakes were easy, just a matter of following the roots and working out the logic of which roots could be connected to make a whole snake. The face was more of a problem as it feels wrong to be carving something ugly.
